Wisconsin Outdoor News editor Dean Bortz writes: The Wisconsin Conservation Congress and Dr. James Kroll have finalized the meeting locations for the six April town hall forums that will be offered across the state as a means of giving sportsmen a chance to deliver their thoughts on Wisconsin deer management to Kroll. Kroll had met earlier with a number of Wisconsin conservation groups by invitation only.

All of the six town hall meetings will take place from April 16 through April 21.

“The purpose is to gather ideas and solutions from citizens, sportsmen and sportswomen to help forge a new age for Wisconsin’s deer management practices,” said Conservation Congress Chairman Rob Bohmann.

Kroll was hired by the Wisconsin Department of Administration at the direction of Gov. Scott Walker to serve a six-month contract as the state’s “deer trustee” to conduct review of Wisconsin’s deer management practices. The town hall style meetings will be held at the following locations:

Fire Danger in Wisconsin! WDNR is asking all individuals to use extreme caution with any kind of outdoor fire or ignition source.

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Burning permits have been suspended today throughout central Wisconsin because of very high fire danger.

This means burning in barrels, debris piles and in grass or wooded areas with a DNR annual permit is prohibited today.

Although campfires are not forbidden they are discouraged. The state Department of Natural Resources is asking all individuals to use extreme caution with any kind of outdoor fire or ignition source, such as a hot muffler in a vehicle taken off road or any kind of discarded smoking materials.

Counties where burning permits are suspended today include Marathon, Menominee, Shawano, Wood, Portage, Waupaca, Juneau, Adams, Waushara, Marquette and Green Lake.

For the latest information on permits and burning restrictions, individuals can go to the DNR homepage at dnr.wi.gov and type “fire” in the search box.

The DNR’s Incident Management Team in Wisconsin Rapids is on alert and firefighting resources have been mobilized. Spotter planes are on standby. Fire observation towers are staffed.
